Borough Heroes Honored at GRVAC Dinner

A
successful resuscitation from near death is
certainly a cause for celebration , and the crew
members and police officers involved were
honored at the annual Installation Dinner of the
Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps held on
January 6, 2007. Their smiles were mirrored by
the next group of members and police officers
who assisted in the birth of a baby in 2006.

Because of our proximity to local hospitals, it
is a rare occurrence that a baby is delivered in
town, and one which is deeply cherished. In the
fifty-five years of the ambulance corps’
existence, only four stork “missions” have been
painted on the ambulances. Those involved
received their stork pins to wear on their
uniforms.

Many
members have dedicated years of service to the
Glen Rock Corps, and the Corps recognizes every
five years with special significance. Barbara
Northway reached twenty years in 2006, and when
presented an inscribed commemorative clock,
remarked what seems to be an oft heard mantra
“it only seems like yesterday that I
started!”. Matt Catanese was also recognized
as having hit his first five year mark. He is
on his way to ten years when he will be
recognized as a Life Member.

In a
new honorarium, Butch Gulmy of Gulmy Contracting
Company was named a Friend of the Corps in
recognition of his (and his father’s before him)
ongoing support of the present and former
expansions to the Ambulance Corps building.
The Gulmy Company donated all the site work,
grading, and paving for the original building in
1951, the first garage addition in 1984, and the
current new garage bay which will house the new
Incident Response trailer.

This festive evening
always gathers the riding active members and
retired life members together for an evening of
celebration and reminiscence. It is a chance to
reestablish and enjoy the camaraderie that all
feel because of a deeply rewarding job well
done, a training seriously undertaken, and a
service very gladly performed.
