EMS WEEK 2023
To The Residents of Glen Rock, New Jersey,
This year EMS Week is being celebrated from May 21-27, 2023.
Volunteer squads in the State of New Jersey provide hours of unpaid service to our residents year-round so that they have the emergency care that they need.
Glen Rock is no exception, and actually is a model for many other volunteer squads in New Jersey. Members of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps have always graciously provided round-the-clock emergency care to their residents and their transients. This involves becoming trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) which is a part time, six-month course that provides the critical knowledge for providing prehospital traumatic or medical emergency care that all potential EMTs in the US must pass. Additionally, Emergency Medical Services Council of New Jersey (EMSCNJ) member squads’ EMTs must continually train to renew their State Certification and stay compliant. In addition to their own training, members donate hours of their time to help recruit new members, raise funds for their squads, and they provide stand-by coverage for numerous community activities and public events. And they still find time to spend with their families, to work their paid jobs and/or attend school.
We all coped with a tremendous challenge to our volunteer existence beginning in 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic. We had multiple EMT and non-EMT members of squads contract COVID-19 and some passed away, and some were grievously affected with persistent breathing problems, new onset of blood clots, strokes, Long COVID and have been unable to continue providing emergency are to their communities. Fortunately, none of the members of Glen Rock’s squad contacted any long-term effects from Covid. The members of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps continued to provide care to the best of their capabilities, kept themselves safe, and kept the ambulances on the road, providing coverage for their residents as needed. It is impossible to repay these dedicated volunteers for all they have done over many years.
During EMS Weeks you can show your support to the members of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps by thanking them for their dedication to your families and the services they provide. The greatest level of thanks could come from joining them as a member, if you are so inclined, so their duties and burden can be shared by more members.
Hailed as heroes during the height of COVID-19, the members of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps continue to shine, providing their services as trained EMS responders during times of crisis. They have never been more essential. I know a few members of the squad personally, including this year’s Chief, and as President of the EMS Council of New Jersey, I am proud of all of them.
Thank you to all of the members of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps and to all volunteers throughout New Jersey.
