 GRVAC Member's Memorial.

"May our sisters and brothers rest in peace"

William Rowland - Life Member
Picture
Picture
William "Bill" Rowland, passed away on December 24, 2021. Bill was a resident and devoted volunteer to the citizens of Shelter Island Heights, NY and Glen Rock, NJ. In between service stints as a firefighter and resident of Shelter Island, Bill was an EMT for the GRVAC. He became a Life Member of the GRVAC during the 70's and 80's, before returning to Shelter Island to resume his duties as a firefighter. The attached photo, taken by Beverlea Walz, shows Bill receiving the honor of Fire Fighter Of The Year. Bill held various positions with SIHFD including Chief. Bill is survived by his loving wife Catherine Rowland, siblings Lesley Adriany, George Rowland, and Rosemary Adriany, and the many relatives, close friends, and communities whom he considered family.

Some of our current Life Members, after hearing of Bill's death, wanted to share some of their fond memories. It was said that Bill, as all other GRVAC EMTs, was a professional from the time his pager went off until the ambulance was made ready for its next call. When done, Bill became a fun lover who was always one of your best friends. He was very active in GRVAC activities as well as helping members with their personal projects.

Bill rode, and shared good times with some of the GRVAC's legends, including Ed Esposito, Diane and Paul Herrlett, Jon Miller, Frank Hoffmann, Pierre Combs, Joan Zanotti, Mickey and Bill Tiernan, Duffy Danna, Tara Berberich and many others. Bill was a member that worked hard, including going door to door for donations, keeping the GRVAC's heart beating. Bill will always be remembered by the GRVAC and he will be missed by all that knew him.

Dave Behar - Life Member, GRVAC
Members of the GRVAC are saddened by the loss of our brother, David Behar on October 30. 2017. Dave joined the squad in 1976, a few years after he moved to Glen Rock. After his retirement in 2002 from Western Electric, Dave increased his volunteer time with the GRVAC by responding to many day calls in addition to his regular Monday night shift. “Covering day calls is the most difficult problem facing most ambulance corps and the GRVAC was fortunate to have someone like Dave Behar, who was retired and was willing to respond,” said GRVAC Chief Ed Esposito.

Dave held the office of GRVAC President, President of the 20th District of the New Jersey State First Aid Council, and was the GRVAC’s Delegate to this organization for 20 years. He retired from the squad a few years ago but remained in touch with many of the members.

Dave leaves behind his wife, Susan, three daughters and five grandchildren.

Serving others was always in Dave's blood....as boy scout when he was young and later serving his country in the United States Army as a Specialist Fourth Class stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, from 1963 to 1965. Afterwards, he served four years as a Sergeant in the Army Reserves.
