Donald Levine - Life Member

Donald M. Levine, age 94, of Glen Rock, NJ passed away at home on June 2, 2024. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated with a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in Zoology. He did research in Liberia, West Africa and Puerto Rico and was a professor of Biology for 38 years at William Paterson University in New Jersey. He was a life member of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a Master Gardener, and a member of the Glen Rock Garden Club. He is survived by his loving wife Marianne, his three sons, Peter, Robert, and Thomas, daughter-in-law Dao, and granddaughter Chelsea, who is following in the family tradition of helping people as an emergency room nurse in Rhode Island. He is also survived by his sister Myrna and her husband Bill Godfrey, and nieces and nephews.

William Rowland - Life Member

William "Bill" Rowland, passed away on December 24, 2021. Bill was a resident and devoted volunteer to the citizens of Shelter Island Heights, NY and Glen Rock, NJ. In between service stints as a firefighter and resident of Shelter Island, Bill was an EMT for the GRVAC. He became a Life Member of the GRVAC during the 70's and 80's, before returning to Shelter Island to resume his duties as a firefighter. The attached photo, taken by Beverlea Walz, shows Bill receiving the honor of Fire Fighter Of The Year. Bill held various positions with SIHFD including Chief. Bill is survived by his loving wife Catherine Rowland, siblings Lesley Adriany, George Rowland, and Rosemary Adriany, and the many relatives, close friends, and communities whom he considered family.
Some of our current Life Members, after hearing of Bill's death, wanted to share some of their fond memories. It was said that Bill, as all other GRVAC EMTs, was a professional from the time his pager went off until the ambulance was made ready for its next call. When done, Bill became a fun lover who was always one of your best friends. He was very active in GRVAC activities as well as helping members with their personal projects. Bill rode, and shared good times with some of the GRVAC's legends, including Ed Esposito, Diane and Paul Herrlett, Jon Miller, Frank Hoffmann, Pierre Combs, Joan Zanotti, Mickey and Bill Tiernan, Duffy Danna, Tara Berberich and many others. Bill was a member that worked hard, including going door to door for donations, keeping the GRVAC's heart beating. Bill will always be remembered by the GRVAC and he will be missed by all that knew him. |
Andrea Satler - Life Member

Andrea Lee Satler was born February 1, 1951 in New York, NY and passed away on Decmeber 31, 2020.
Because of COVID, there were no services, but if anyone wants to send a sympathy card, her daughter's address is as follows: Linsay Satler Deal 8901 Taunton Drive Huntersville, NC 28078 Linsay will be publishing an obituary shortly and requests donations in her memory to the GRVAC. She plans a service in the future, but obviously does not know when. |
John Krantz - Life Member

John Krantz, 95, of Chestnut Street, Forestville, died Wednesday, March 11th, 2020 at his residence, following a short illness. He was born in Glen Rock, NJ on November 29, 1924, the son of the late Newton R. and Margaret L. (MacNeill) Krantz.Mr. Krantz was a graduate of Ridgewood High School, Class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WW II. Mr. Krantz owned the former John Krantz Painting & Decorating in Glen Rock, NJ, for over 40 years. He was a member of the Ambulance Corps in Glen Rock, NJ for 30 years, a member of the American Legion for 71 years, the Sunset Drifters Snowmobile Club of Silver Creek, a life member of the Ismailia Shriners and an antique car enthusiast. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, attending auctions, refinishing furniture and was an avid snowmobiler.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Jim) Markham, of Forestville; a son, John (Toni) Krantz, of Glen Rock, NJ and three grandchildren Emily, Olivia and Lewis Markham. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Priscilla Ann (Titus) Krantz, whom he married in 1954 and a sister Cynthia Clark. |

Victor Charles Dagenais - Former Member
With our deepest regrets, the GRVAC is saddened to announce the passing of our former member and brother, Victor Charles "Charlie" Dagenais, age 34, of Boonton, NJ. Charlie passed away on February 20, 2019. Born in Teaneck, NJ, he was raised in Glen Rock. Charlie was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marines, and was a life member of Thomas D. Egan Glen Rock Post 850 V.F.W., member of American Legion Post 174 of Wayne and was active with the Wounded Warrior Project. An involved member of his community, Charlie served with the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps in high school and as a young adult. Charlie participated in America’s 9/11 Motorcycle Ride for many years. He was also a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Boonton. New Chief, Brian Markey of the GRVAC, said "If possible, the GRVAC would provide a 21-gun salute to honor Charlie for his service to Glen Rock as a member of the GRVAC and to our country for his service in the Middle East". |
The GRVAC's beloved brother is also the son of Victor A. "Rusty" and Anne (Cronen) Dagenais. Rusty and Anne have been a part of the GRVAC for over two decades. Rusty is a Life Member and has held many officer positions for the GRVAC including President. Also surviving Charlie are loving brother Andrew Dagenais and wife Michele, Cynthia Dagenais and Ryan Dagenais. Cherished uncle of Julia and Ben Dagenais.

Mike Lewitt - Life Member, GRVAC
Mike Lewitt, age 61, of West Milford, NJ passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019. Born in New York City and raised in Fair Lawn, he resided in West Milford for four years. A proud Navy veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post 145 and Thomas D. Egan Post V.F.W. Post 850 both of Glen Rock. He was a volunteer and Life Member with the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps serving proudly with the fabled "Wednesday Night Crew". Mike enjoyed fishing and was a loyal NY Yankees and NY Giants fan. He was an inspector with KS Engineers, P.C. in Newark, NJ for many years. Loving and devoted father of Daniel Lewitt and Julie Lewitt. Beloved brother of Shariann Lewitt and husband John Irvine. As a veteran, Mike was honored with honors at his services. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Michael to the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 700 South Maple Avenue, Glen Rock, NJ 07452 would be appreciated. |
Alvin Miller- Life Member, GRVAC
Alvin T. Miller, Sr., age 94, of Glen Rock, NJ passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018. Born and raised in New York City, he resided in Glen Rock since 1965. He proudly served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Borough of Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps. An avid fisherman, he was a member of the Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County. Alvin also enjoyed photography and gardening. Prior to retiring in 1988, he was a bus driver with Mass Transit in New York City for 20 years. Beloved husband of the late Rosalie Miller. Loving and devoted father of Alvin T. Miller, Jr. and the late Valerie Miller. Cherished grandfather of Robert, Michael, Janelle, Daniel and Matthew. Adored great-grandfather of Robert Jr., Kim and Kienna. |
William Taylor Fisher (a.k.a. Bill) - Life Member, GRVAC
Bill, age 88, of Hampstead, NC and formerly of Glen Rock, NJ passed away on August 26, 2018 in Wilmington, NC. Bill was born to Charles & Gladys Fisher on June 20, 1930 at his childhood home in Glen Rock, NJ. He graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1948 and Newark Collage of Engineering in 1957. He married Andrea Dayton of Spring Valley, NY on July 6th 1963. He worked as a Mechanical Engineer for several companies throughout his career but retired from Howmedica a Division of Pfizer 1994. Bill lived in Glen Rock, NJ for over 65 years before retiring to Hampstead, NC with his beloved wife Andrea. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the 11th Airborne Division of the Army as a Paratrooper and Mechanic from 1949 - 1954. He was stationed in Fort Campbell, GA. He was a life time member of the Glen Rock Ambulance Corps, severed on the Glen Rock Board of Health and a retired member of the Wilmington, NC Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Bill is preceded in death by his wife Andrea Dayton Fisher, parents Charles & Gladys Fisher, and his sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Fred Widmayer. Bill is survived by his son, Jamie Fisher and wife Joan of Glen Rock, NJ, daughter Betsy Schuh and husband Christopher of Edmonds, WA, and Grandchildren Luke, Kyle, Bryce Fisher, Brody Schuh, Step Grandchildren Jessica and Kyle Schuh and numerous other loving family and friends |
Dave Behar - Life Member, GRVAC
Members of the GRVAC are saddened by the loss of our brother, David Behar on October 30. 2017. Dave joined the squad in 1976, a few years after he moved to Glen Rock. After his retirement in 2002 from Western Electric, Dave increased his volunteer time with the GRVAC by responding to many day calls in addition to his regular Monday night shift. “Covering day calls is the most difficult problem facing most ambulance corps and the GRVAC was fortunate to have someone like Dave Behar, who was retired and was willing to respond,” said GRVAC Chief Ed Esposito. Dave held the office of GRVAC President, President of the 20th District of the New Jersey State First Aid Council, and was the GRVAC’s Delegate to this organization for 20 years. He retired from the squad a few years ago but remained in touch with many of the members. Dave leaves behind his wife, Susan, three daughters and five grandchildren. Serving others was always in Dave's blood....as boy scout when he was young and later serving his country in the United States Army as a Specialist Fourth Class stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, from 1963 to 1965. Afterwards, he served four years as a Sergeant in the Army Reserves. |
Paul Herrlett - Life Member, GRVAC
On November 15, 2010, the membership of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps drove President Paul Herrlett, as heard on Glen Rock's FD EMS channel 1 "We are taking our brother Paul Herrlett, to his final resting place". The moment was full of sorrow to the members that were onboard the ambulances to hear those words spoken. Paul E.Herrlett, 67, of Glen Rock, NJ passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010. Paul, was born in Abbington, PA, raised in River Edge, NJ, and resided in Glen Rock for thirty-nine years. Paul earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Paul was employed for 20 years with Dow Chemical Company. While working at Dow, he was a committed and caring member for the Borough of Glen Rock. In addition to being the president, Paul also devoted thirty years of membership to the GRVAC. He truly loved keeping Glen Rock's heart beating as a part of the GRVAC. Paul's commitment to the borough of Glen Rock also included the position of president to Board of Health. Paul was a parishioner of St. Catharine R.C. Church in Glen Rock. An avid New York Giants fan, his life centered around enjoying the time he spent with family and friends at Silver Beach, watching hockey, planning trips and traveling and drinking Sambuca with his friends. Mr. Herrlett was employed as the transportation coordinator for the Borough of Glen Rock where he was the director of the Glen Rock Commuter Shuttle Program. Beloved husband of Diane (Garzilli) Herrlett. Loving and devoted father of Matthew and Peter Herrlett. Dear brother-in-law of Vincent Garzilli. |
