"Rising To The Challenge"
These words convey an incredibly powerful message about the GRVAC EMTs. They go “Beyond the 911 Call”.
Yes, being an EMT is about preparation and providing excellent patient care. But it’s also about so much more.
These words convey an incredibly powerful message about the GRVAC EMTs. They go “Beyond the 911 Call”.
Yes, being an EMT is about preparation and providing excellent patient care. But it’s also about so much more.
- It’s about community care that takes time, energy and heart.
- It’s far beyond the scope of everyday emergency calls.
- It’s a responsibility to care for the residents of Glen Rock—as we treat them as our children, our parents, our brothers, our sisters, our friends—and it doesn’t end when the shift does.
"Beyond The Call"
Our members do much more than race to scenes, treat patients and deliver people to a hospitals. There is no question that when our pagers alert us of an emergency, our adrenalin get fired up.
But, perhaps more important – go “Beyond The Call” to hold a hand or offer a shoulder to lean on. We are there when our patients are at their worst and need a friend they can count on. You are our family.

- We provide tours of our building and demonstrate equipment to 2nd and 3rd graders. We try to make the kids aware of what we do and what they can do in the case of emergency.
- We standby at sporting events.
- We are at street fairs and town events.
- We provide rehab at working fires.
- We provide mutual aid help to our neighboring towns.
- Train, train, and retrain to keep Glen Rock residents safe.
Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps Appreciates the Glen Rock Police Department
It would be remiss for The Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps to celebrate National EMS Week without recognizing and offering our appreciation for the contributions of our brothers and sisters of the Glen Rock Police Department. Each time the GRVAC is summoned to an emergency, so is the GRPD. Because the GRPD is mobile, they are usually the first responders on the scene. If the emergency requires, they spring into action and provide the emergency medical/trauma care that is needed until the GRVAC and/or paramedics arrive. Most GRPD members are trained in first responder techniques so they can handle emergencies of all types. In cardiac emergencies, they will provide CPR and defibrillation. When they encounter an opiate overdose, they will administer Naloxone (NARCAN) and often begin CPR. When they arrive and perform deescalating techniques in the case of emotionally mental disturbances, they keep the patient, EMTs, paramedics and other bystanders safer. If a patient is bleeding severely, they will do everything in their power to stop the bleed. If seconds matter, they will do what they can with the delivery of a new-born child. They are always there to help us lift and carry patients. The GRPD’s professionalism and willingness to help and care for our patients is such a large part of successful patient outcomes. We at the GRVAC just want to say thanks to our friends at the GRPD. We want everyone to know that the GRPD is the best.

"Together, We Keep Glen Rock's Heart Beating"
The Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps (GRVAC) was chartered September 16, 1951 by a group of concerned citizens to provide emergency first aid and transportation for their neighbors. A door-to-door fund drive raised the $10,000 needed to purchase an ambulance, which was housed in the garage of Charles White, the first GRVAC captain. This garage is now the offices of Kilroys Wondermarket. Charter members included Harvey and Janet Hatch, Frank Balou, Frank Kuna, Bob Brunswick, John Krantz, Don Knapp, Harold Pabst, and Bill Hashagen. The GRVAC was on call five days a week. Until the advent of a paging system in the late 1960s, members left their phone numbers at the police desk, which contacted them by telephone whenever an ambulance was needed.
By 1953, the Corps was responding to 150 calls per year and membership grew accordingly, requiring that a headquarters and garage be built. With groundbreaking on December 22, 1953, Phil Gulmy, Sr. poured concrete and Charley White's trucks transported bricks from Sayreville. The new headquarters building was dedicated in 1955.
With the need to replace an aging ambulance, the GRVAC conducted a fund drive in 1961 to purchase a Sayers & Scovill (S&S) ambulance built on a Cadillac chassis. Dedicated on September 10, 1961, GRVAC President William Hashagen presented the keys to Captain Jack Murphy. Another S&S ambulance was acquired a few years later and dedicated on May 30, 1968, with President Robert Chapman presenting the keys to Captain Emil Vanderspiegel.
Since our early years the GRVAC has seen new ambulances, state-of-the arts equipment, new technologies, changes to our facilities, and more stringent training requirement. With each passing year, and each change, the level of our service has continued to grow. The members of the GRVAC want to offer our sincere thanks and recognition for the continued support from our residents and town officials.
